The 2027 BYD Seagull starts at 65,900 yuan in China, or roughly $9,800, and runs to 99,900 yuan (about $14,900) for the fully loaded version. BYD launched the second-generation city car on 20 October 2026, and the headline is not the price — it is what the price now buys. Pay from 75,900 yuan and the Seagull charges from 10% to 70% in five minutes, a figure that until recently belonged to cars costing ten times as much. BYD is also knocking 3,000 yuan off every version as a launch offer.

Context and Background

The Seagull has been BYD's volume weapon since 2023 — a tiny, cheap hatchback that sold in enormous numbers at home and gave the company a foothold in dozens of export markets. It is the car that made the rest of the industry nervous about Chinese pricing, and it is sold abroad under three different badges: Dolphin Surf in Europe and the UK, Dolphin Mini across much of Latin America, and Atto 1 in Asia-Pacific markets including Australia and New Zealand.

This replacement is a far bigger change than the price suggests. The new car is 4,205mm long — 425mm more than the model it replaces — 95mm wider, 30mm lower, and sits on a wheelbase stretched 150mm to 2,650mm. That growth turns a four-seater into a genuine five-seater with a centre rear seat, and it moves the Seagull out of the microcar class and into the territory occupied by cars like BYD's own Dolphin. Despite the extra metal, curb weight rises only to 1,180-1,255kg, from 1,160-1,240kg.

More surprising is what happened underneath. The new Seagull switches to rear-wheel drive with a single rear motor and an independent multi-link rear axle — an unusual specification at any price, let alone under $10,000, and one that makes the outgoing car's front-drive layout look like a different class of product.

How Much Does the 2027 BYD Seagull Cost?

Pricing opens at 65,900 yuan (about $9,800) and tops out at 99,900 yuan (about $14,900), with a 3,000 yuan launch discount applied across the range. That entry figure is roughly 700 dollars less than the outgoing Seagull launched at, which is the detail worth pausing on: the car is larger, more powerful, rear-driven and better equipped, and it costs less than before. The cheapest version with Flash Charging is 75,900 yuan (around $11,300).

The range splits cleanly in two. The two entry variants use a 30.1 kWh pack and are aimed at buyers who charge at home — BYD includes a 7kW wallbox and its installation with those cars, which quietly removes the main hidden cost of EV ownership at this end of the market. The three higher trims carry the 39.2 kWh pack and the Flash Charging hardware. BYD has published prices for the ends of the range rather than a full line-by-line trim list, so the exact figure for each middle variant is not yet confirmed. Dollar conversions here are approximate and move with the exchange rate.

BYD Seagull Range, Battery and 5-Minute Flash Charging

The 39.2 kWh version is rated at 420 km on China's CLTC cycle and the 30.1 kWh car at 320 km — each 15 km better than the equivalent outgoing model, from batteries of almost identical size. BYD credits that to efficiency, claiming 9 kWh per 100 km. One caveat matters for anyone outside China: CLTC is a generous test. The same 420 km figure translates to roughly 340 km on Europe's WLTP cycle and under 200 miles on the stricter US EPA cycle, so treat the headline number as a best case rather than a like-for-like comparison with a European or American rating.

Flash Charging is the genuine advance. Using the second-generation Blade battery, the 39.2 kWh car is claimed to go from 10% to 70% in five minutes and from 10% to 97% in nine, on BYD's own high-power Flash Charging piles. The practical limit is the network rather than the car: BYD says it has 12,165 Flash Charging stations running with a target of 20,000 by the end of the year, and those are in China. On an ordinary charger the Seagull charges at ordinary speeds, so the five-minute claim describes a specific partial recharge in the right conditions, not everyday charging.

Exterior

The shape is recognisably Seagull but softened, with more curvature and far less of the stubby, cab-forward look the old car had — unsurprising given the extra 425mm of length and the 150mm longer wheelbase. The proportions are the main story: the overhangs are tighter relative to the body, the roofline drops 30mm, and the longer nose makes room for a 94-litre front trunk, which the previous car did not have. The longer body should also help crash performance, and BYD is not expected to need the market-specific bumper extensions that earlier versions wore to meet overseas pedestrian-impact rules. Colours run to six: Berry Pink, Cream White, Ice Coconut Blue, Lime Green, Mango Orange and Sesame Gray. A 4.95m turning radius keeps it city-friendly despite the growth.

Interior and Seating

The cabin is where the price looks least believable. A 15.6-inch touchscreen running a DeepSeek-based AI assistant dominates the dashboard, there is 50W wireless phone charging, and the front seats are heated and ventilated with a massage function for the driver — equipment that is optional or absent on European cars at three times the money. The extra wheelbase buys a proper centre rear seat, taking capacity from four to five. Storage is unusually thorough: BYD counts 31 separate spaces, including 24 litres under the rear seats, and quotes 1,380 litres behind the front seats with the rear bench folded, plus the 94-litre frunk. BYD says that is enough for two 24-inch and two 20-inch suitcases in the back with a carry-on up front. Higher trims add the LiDAR-equipped DiPilot 300 version of BYD's God's Eye driver-assistance suite, though features vary by version and systems of this type need regulatory approval before they can be switched on in many export markets.

Can You Buy the BYD Seagull in the US or UK?

Not in the United States, and not yet in this form in the UK. No Chinese-branded passenger cars are sold through official US dealer networks, because electric vehicles imported from China have faced a 100% Section 301 tariff since September 2024 — a rate that makes a sub-$10,000 car commercially impossible there, whatever its merits. BYD has challenged the tariffs in the US Court of International Trade, but nothing has changed in the showrooms.

The UK and Europe do get this car, as the Dolphin Surf, but the European version has never been a straight copy of the Chinese one: it has been built longer, and its top two trims use a 43.2 kWh battery that China does not offer. BYD has not announced when, or whether, this new generation and its Flash Charging hardware will reach export markets, so UK buyers should not assume the five-minute figure transfers — particularly as it depends on BYD's own high-power charging network, which is a China-only proposition today.

What It Means for Buyers

The significance here is not that BYD has built another cheap EV. It is that the two objections most often raised against cheap EVs — not enough range, and too slow to charge — have both been answered at the bottom of the market rather than the top. A 420 km CLTC rating and a five-minute 10-70% top-up, in a five-seat car costing under $12,000, reframes what an entry-level electric car is allowed to be. The included home wallbox on the base cars is the same thinking applied to the part buyers usually discover after signing.

For Western buyers the lesson is mostly about the gap. Nothing on sale in the UK, Europe or the US comes close to this combination of price, size and charging speed, and the reason is partly cost structure and partly policy. Tariffs keep the car out of America entirely and the European version arrives re-engineered and far more expensive — the Dolphin Surf launched in Europe at about $22,600, more than twice the Chinese entry price. The Seagull is best read as a benchmark for what is now technically possible at this price, not as a car most readers will be able to buy.

Common Questions

How much does the 2027 BYD Seagull cost?

The 2027 BYD Seagull starts at 65,900 yuan in China, about $9,800, and rises to 99,900 yuan, roughly $14,900, for the top specification. Versions with Flash Charging begin at 75,900 yuan, or around $11,300. BYD is applying a 3,000 yuan launch discount across the range, and has published the end points of the range rather than a full trim-by-trim price list.

What is the BYD Seagull's range?

The 39.2 kWh version is rated at 420 km and the 30.1 kWh version at 320 km, both on China's CLTC cycle — 261 and 199 miles respectively. CLTC is more generous than other test cycles, and the 420 km figure corresponds to roughly 340 km on Europe's WLTP standard and under 200 miles on the US EPA cycle.

Can the BYD Seagull really charge in 5 minutes?

BYD claims 10% to 70% in five minutes, and 10% to 97% in nine minutes, for the 39.2 kWh second-generation Blade battery on its own high-power Flash Charging piles. That is a partial recharge under favourable conditions rather than a full charge, it is not available on the two cheapest versions, and it requires BYD's Flash Charging network — around 12,165 stations today, all in China.

Is the BYD Seagull sold in the US?

No. Electric vehicles imported from China have faced a 100% Section 301 tariff since September 2024, and no Chinese-branded passenger cars are sold through official US dealer channels. BYD has filed a legal challenge against the tariffs in the US Court of International Trade, but the Seagull is not available to American buyers.

Is the BYD Seagull the same as the Dolphin Surf?

They are the same model line under different names — Dolphin Surf in Europe and the UK, Dolphin Mini in much of Latin America, and Atto 1 in several Asia-Pacific markets. They are not identical cars, though: the European version has been built longer than the Chinese one and offers a 43.2 kWh battery that China does not. BYD has not yet said when this new generation will reach export markets.

The new Seagull is on sale in China now, with export plans still unannounced. Whether or not it ever reaches a British or American showroom, it has moved the floor: five-minute charging and a five-seat body are no longer things you have to pay a premium to get.
