BMW has put a price on its most important electric car in a generation. The 2027 BMW iX3 50 xDrive — the first series-production model built on the company's clean-sheet Neue Klasse architecture — will start at $61,500 plus $1,350 destination when it reaches U.S. dealers on September 25, with reservations and the online configurator already live. It is not just another electric SUV in a crowded field; it is the template BMW will stretch across its entire next-generation EV lineup, and the numbers it launches with signal exactly how aggressive the brand intends to be.

Context & Background

Neue Klasse — "new class" in German — is the name BMW revived from the 1960s sedans that once saved the company, and the stakes this time are almost as high. The platform underpins a fresh electrical architecture, a new sixth-generation eDrive powertrain, and a completely reimagined cabin interface. BMW says the new drive technology cuts energy losses by 40 percent versus the outgoing fifth-generation system, trims weight by 10 percent, and lowers manufacturing costs by 20 percent. Those efficiency gains are the reason the iX3 can undercut rivals on price while beating most of them on range.

The iX3 replaces a previous model of the same name that was essentially a combustion X3 converted to electric power. This one shares nothing with that car. It is purpose-built as an EV, and it launches a rollout that will bring a Neue Klasse sedan and further models in short order, making the iX3 the clearest preview yet of where BMW is headed.

Key Details

The launch iX3 50 xDrive pairs two electric motors for all-wheel drive, producing a combined 463 horsepower and 473 lb-ft of torque, enough for a 0–60 mph sprint of 4.7 seconds. It draws on a 108.7-kWh battery using more energy-dense cylindrical cells and an 800-volt architecture. EPA-estimated range peaks at 434 miles on the no-cost 20-inch summer tire package, and ranges from 383 to 399 miles across the other wheel and tire combinations.

That 800-volt system also delivers the headline charging figure: up to 400 kW at a compatible DC fast charger, adding an estimated 185 miles in ten minutes or covering the 10-to-80-percent window in 21 minutes. A NACS port is standard, giving native access to Tesla's Supercharger network, and the car supports 15.4 kW AC charging as well as bi-directional charging for vehicle-to-load use. Standard equipment is generous for the price, including BMW's Panoramic Vision display, Driving Assistant Plus, active blind-spot detection, wireless device charging, and Digital Key Plus.

Exterior

The iX3 introduces a cleaner, more restrained take on BMW design language. The signature kidney grille is reinterpreted as an illuminated, closed-off panel, flanked by slim vertical light elements, while the surfacing is smoother and more aerodynamic than the outgoing car. Wheel choices run from 20-inch aero designs to staggered 22-inch M items, and the optional BMW Iconic Glow lighting adds contour illumination to the front and rear.

Interior

Inside, the iX3 debuts BMW Panoramic Vision — a full-width display projected across the base of the windshield — alongside a free-cut central touchscreen and a redesigned multifunction steering wheel, all running the new BMW Operating System X. The cabin uses perforated Veganza upholstery as standard, with Merino leather optional, and offers four contemporary interior color themes from Black to Agave Green. Ambient lighting, wireless charging, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are all standard.

What It Means for Buyers

At $61,500 the iX3 lands below the Audi Q6 e-tron and Genesis Electrified GV70 while offering more usable range than either, a combination that reframes the premium electric SUV value equation. Buyers cross-shopping the segment will find a car that charges faster, goes further, and carries the newest software and interface BMW has ever fielded, without the price premium that usually accompanies a flagship technology debut.

The obvious asterisk is the Tesla Model Y, which starts more than $20,000 lower and remains the volume benchmark. BMW is not chasing that price; it is betting that the iX3's range, cabin quality, and Supercharger access justify the step up for luxury buyers. A more affordable rear-drive iX3 40 is expected to follow, which should widen the car's appeal and sharpen the comparison against mainstream EVs.

✓ Pros
  • Class-leading EPA range of up to 434 miles
  • 800V architecture enables 400 kW charging — 185 miles in 10 minutes
  • Undercuts Audi Q6 e-tron and Genesis GV70 on price
  • Standard NACS port for native Supercharger access
  • Generous standard equipment including Panoramic Vision and driver assistance
✕ Cons
  • Over $20,000 more than a base Tesla Model Y
  • Top 434-mile figure requires the summer-tire package
  • Key driver-assist and comfort features locked behind paid packages
  • Cheaper rear-drive iX3 40 not available at launch

The 2027 BMW iX3 50 xDrive goes on sale September 25, with deliveries beginning in late September; the configurator and reservations, secured with a $1,000 deposit, are live now on bmwusa.com. As the first of many Neue Klasse models, it sets a high bar — and a pointed challenge to every premium EV maker watching.
