2027 Hyundai Tucson Revealed: Boxier Design and a 245-HP Hybrid

Hyundai has fully revealed the fifth-generation Tucson, overhauling one of the world's best-selling vehicles with sharper, boxier styling and a substantially more powerful hybrid. The new Tucson and Tucson Hybrid arrive in the fourth quarter, an extended-range EV follows in early 2027, and Hyundai is positioning the compact SUV as the next pillar of a hybrid business that has quietly become enormous in North America.

Context & Background

The Tucson is central to Hyundai's global success. The company says it ranks as the seventh best-selling vehicle in the world, with more than 10 million sold since it launched, and that volume makes any redesign high-stakes. This one is dramatic. Hyundai has abandoned the outgoing car's intricate Parametric Dynamics look for a new 'Art of Steel' design direction, drawing on the 2027 Elantra and the rugged Crater concept for a blockier, more upright shape.

The change is more than skin deep. The new Tucson grows in every key dimension, with length up 60mm to 4,700mm, the wheelbase stretched 30mm to 2,785mm and width increased 40mm to 1,905mm, freeing up what Hyundai calls class-leading passenger space. A rugged XRT trim returns with more aggressive bumpers and dark cladding, broadening the range's appeal beyond the suburban commuter.

Key Details

The headline mechanical change is the hybrid. Built around Hyundai's next-generation TMED-II system, it pairs a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder with a dual-motor transmission to produce 245 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. Hyundai says that is 27 percent more power and 43 percent more torque than the gas-only 1.6-litre turbo Tucson, and yet the hybrid also uses 43 percent less fuel, with a claimed combined figure of 5.7 L/100km and a 0-100 km/h time of 8.5 seconds. It is a rare case of a hybrid beating its combustion sibling on both performance and economy.

The gas and hybrid models lead the launch in the fourth quarter, but the more strategically interesting variant comes later. Hyundai has confirmed an extended-range EV, an electric drivetrain replenished by an on-board gas generator, arriving in North America in the first half of 2027 and built across multiple continents. A plug-in hybrid targeting around 100km of electric range is also expected, giving the Tucson one of the broadest electrified line-ups in the segment.

Exterior

Visually, the 2027 Tucson trades curves for geometry. Boxy wheel arches, deeply sculpted side panels and a tall, upright nose give it a more purposeful stance, while thin LED light strips arranged in a wide 'H' pattern span both the front and rear fascias to create a distinctive light signature. The XRT variant pushes the look further with chunkier bumpers and protective cladding aimed at light off-road use.

Interior

Inside, Hyundai has simplified the layout. A cleaner centre stack sits beneath a larger standard screen, and the stretched dimensions translate into more head and legroom front and rear. The cabin follows the exterior's more structured theme, trading the outgoing car's flowing dashboard for straighter lines and clearer physical separation between the display, climate controls and console.

What It Means for Buyers

The Tucson's real target is obvious: the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, the two hybrids that define the compact-SUV class. By giving its hybrid a genuine power advantage, 245 horsepower is strong for the segment, Hyundai is trying to win on driving appeal as well as efficiency, rather than treating the hybrid as the sensible-but-slow option. For buyers, that means the electrified Tucson no longer asks for a performance compromise.

The launch also underlines how far Hyundai's hybrid business has come in North America, where it has now sold more than a million hybrids. That mix has grown from roughly 1 percent when the Sonata Hybrid arrived in 2011 to about 25 percent today, led by the Palisade Hybrid and now extended by the Tucson Hybrid and Hyundai's first hybrid Genesis, the GV80. The company expects more than 10 hybrid models and roughly half of its regional sales to be hybrid by 2030, much of it built in Alabama and at its Metaplant in Georgia, a hedge against uneven EV demand that keeps production close to the customer.

✓ Pros
  • Hybrid gains meaningful power at 245 hp and 280 lb-ft
  • Better performance and better economy than the gas model
  • Broad electrified range, including a coming EREV and PHEV
  • Roomier interior from a longer, wider body
  • Rugged XRT trim broadens the line-up's appeal
✕ Cons
  • Polarising boxier styling is a sharp break from the current car
  • US pricing and full trim details are not yet confirmed
  • EREV and some variants arrive later, not at launch
  • Performance and economy figures are manufacturer claims pending independent testing

The gas and hybrid Tucson reach showrooms in the fourth quarter, with the extended-range EV following in the first half of 2027 and a plug-in hybrid expected alongside. Hyundai has yet to release US pricing, but with a stronger hybrid, a bolder look and an expanding electrified line-up, the 2027 Tucson lands as one of the more complete challengers to the segment's Japanese leaders. Full specifications and pricing are due closer to the on-sale date.
